Refined white marble statue from the first half of the 20th century. This is a very high quality copy of a work by the great Italian sculptor Giacomo Ginotti (1845-1897). Known as The Slave or The Emancipation of Slavery, it was a notable success and was admired by the King of Italy Victor Emmanuel II who purchased it to exhibit it in Capodimonte. The sculpture portrays a young slave with exotic features who tries in vain to free herself from her chains and the effort is perceived through the energetic pose and the concentrated expression on her face. This statue takes on a social denunciation against slavery, at the time not completely abolished in various parts of the world. However, the strong sensuality of the work cannot be denied, in fact the woman is naked except for a turban that covers her hair and in the effort she compresses her breasts between her arms. A sculpture of great charm and in a beautiful patina, overall in excellent condition.
